Tj & Pete’s earthy and emotional wedding in Ireland.
Two amazingly talented, beautiful souls I had the pleasure to meet and photograph their wedding in Doolin .
Very different , inspiring and NON traditional ( what i absolutely loved )…
Tj and Pete – I couldn’t wait to share this beautiful story .
“We wanted our day to feel less formal than most weddings we had attended so we set off finding a venue that could offer us a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere. We wanted a venue that would work with us and allow us to do our thing. Our aim was to move away from the traditional White Wedding idea. We had attended the Doolin Folk Festival for a number of years and thought that Hotel Doolin would be ideal for us. It’s location first off is fantastic. The wonderful West Clare coast has so much to offer, from seascapes and cliffs to stone-lined green fields. From our initial meeting the management and staff could not have been more helpful and genuinely engaging in our hopes for the day. They really helped us all along the way and gave us complete free reign to do whatever we wanted with the marquee space. They offered recommendation for suppliers and always tried whenever possible to accommodate any of our random requests. We arranged to have lamps, plants and even a wooden wall installed to complete our theme for our day and nothing seemed to phase the team. We also tried to incorporate and support local business and producers were possible. The wedding decorator was amazing too and really took on board our concept from the word go.
There were so many highlights that it’s really hard to pick just one. We loved the wedding ceremony itself; I never expected to be as emotional. Also, the speeches really were lovely as we got to hear some lovely things from our friends & family. And personally, I loved when my choir joined us later in the evening to sing some really sweet songs for us and our guests after the meal… it really was the icing on the cake!
Make sure to take 5 minutes out of the day and just sit down in a corner by yourselves and look around your venue, look at all the people who have gathered to celebrate a great occasion with you and look at all the nice things that you planned, coming to life and just take those few moments to be alone together and soak it all up, as the day goes by in the blink of an eye.
The relaxed atmosphere and staff of Hotel Doolin really sold it for us. We loved the rural & rugged location by the coast but also, the venue was just perfect for us in terms of the informal & relaxed feeling.
It went off without a hitch to be honest (except maybe for a few light showers). The Hotel were amazing to deal with and all the staff were just superb, even the wonderful hotel gardener was fantastic. Our suppliers were brilliant to be fair and as for our photographer, we loved her! “

We had a humanist ceremony in the Hotel marquee. Our celebrant Dara was great to deal with and allowed us to make the ceremony our own. We had readings from TJ’s sister, Elaine, and Pete’s brother, Robert. It turned out to be a very emotional ceremony, which was not what we expected. We also incorporated a tree potting in to the ceremony. Our mothers both brought a pot of soil from their gardens. They added this together around the roots of a small apple tree, which we will plant on in years to come. It made the occasion really special and lots of people commented on how lovely it was.
Our ‘theme’ was simply everything we liked. We decided to make the place feel like an extension of our house with our wooden backdrop, lamps & soft glows from candles & lots and lots of plants around. We really like natural earthy colours and textures so we incorporated these in anyway we could. We used herbs as our centre pieces with homemade table numbers which added a bit of a light hearted disco feel for the evening as they reflected all the different lights around the room!
We also organized an intimate folk gig for the evening after our wedding and that was amazing. We had a 5 piece folk band called ‘I Draw Slow’ and we snuggled into a small corner of the marquee and enjoyed their music. It was just so nice, and really relaxing after the busy day itself!
Did you go on honeymoon?
We went to East coast USA for 3 weeks on honeymoon. We left it over a month between our wedding and the time we flew out as it gave us time to recharge our batteries and get ready for an amazing trip. We stayed in 7 locations over our 3 weeks mainly around New England area, which included Salem for Halloween the on to the White Mountains in New Hampshire, southern Maine, Boston, Provincetown, Providence & New York. We truly enjoyed ourselves and did loads while there but it was also nice to get home and see family after those 3 busy weeks. We hope to visit more of USA in the future.
Bridesmaids and groomsmen:
Paraic O’Donnell, Roisin Murray, Louise McCarthy & Eimear Murphy.
They are all long term friends and it meant the world to us to have them stand with us on the day.
Photographer – Olga – MrsRedhead Photography
Olga is a pleasure to work with and so easy going but yet behind it all, she is the ultimate professional. Her shots are unique and she made us & our guests feel so comfortable on the day. We did an engagement shoot with Olga before our wedding to help break the ice and it really put us at ease for the big day. She has been a dream to deal with after the wedding too and even sent us a preview at about 1.30am on the night our wedding. We look forward to working with her again in the future!
