Romantic Irish countryside, blue skies and spiritual ceremony on the top of the cliff
Shannon & Thomas
” We planned for a cold, moody, overcast day, or even rain, but we had beautiful blue skies and warm weather! Our bridesmaids even got sunburned! We couldn’t have dreamed of more perfect weather.
When choosing the wedding destination, we thought of all the incredible places we visited and that we wanted to share with our friends and family. Doolin, Ireland easily stood out. We could have easily hosted a beautiful beach wedding in California or a mountain wedding in Colorado, but we wanted to do something different that was unique to our relationship.
We quickly locked down Hotel Doolin as our reception site, but decided that if our family and friends were flying out from the U.S. to attend our wedding then we should have our ceremony somewhere that celebrates the beauty of the west coast of Ireland. We hired Samantha Harding to plan and coordinate our ceremony. She was a dream to work with and helped design our perfect day. We even flew out in August 2016 to meet with her, see potential ceremony sites, meet potential vendors, and enjoy our tasting at Hotel Doolin.
We spent the next year working with the loveliest people across Ireland to plan a beautiful wedding ceremony above a cliff on Pat Sweeney’s farm – just north of the Cliffs of Moher – and to celebrate our reception afterward at Hotel Doolin, the same location where we enjoyed the Doolin Folk Festival two years earlier!
Thomas: The highlight of my day was seeing Shannon for the first-look. I had so much emotion building up that morning and it was a special moment to have with just her before we joined everyone else to celebrate the day.
Shannon: My favorite was part was having a week long vacation with my family and friends in a town we adore. But if I had to pick a highlight from our wedding day, it was our entrance to our reception. We didn’t have anything planned, and Thomas twirled and dipped me just like we would at home dancing in our living room. It was a perfect impromptu moment.
The outline of the week’s events started with a weekend in Dublin with many of our friends. We arrived to Doolin on Sunday and hosted a Welcome Party in the Courtyard at Hotel Doolin. We served Guinness, Prosecco, and Burren Belinis. We then wandered to O’Connor’s Pub for dinner with the group. The next morning, Thomas and I visited the Ennis Registrar’s Office to get our marriage documents in order. At the same time, a large group of our friends and family joined Pat Sweeney on the Doolin Cliffs Walk. We met all of our guests at the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Centre for pictures and enjoyed a wonderful afternoon viewing the sites. Later that night, Thomas’ parents hosted a rehearsal dinner at McDermott’s Pub with family and our bridal party.
We gifted our guests ‘Cliffs of Moher Centre and Cruise’ tickets from O’Brien Line Ferries. All of our guests joined us the day before the wedding to visit the Cliffs of Moher. They also viewed the Cliffs from the sea on the ferry ride at a time that fit their schedule best, as part of their gift from us.
The next day was the wedding day, Tuesday, 9 May!
Wednesday afternoon, we hosted a Farewell BBQ in the Marquee at Hotel Doolin with a live trad band to keep our spirits going. Thomas and I enjoyed a ferry ride (O’Brien Line Ferries) to the Cliffs that evening with about 20 friends and family who were still in town. We jetted off to Dubrovnik, Croatia the next day!
